Swedish

Fiddling

Sandy’s journey to trace her Swedish ancestry led her to discover the strange and magical world of Swedish Folk Music.  For the last 16 years, she has studied with legendary Swedish and Norwegian folk fiddlers, learning tunes in the “old style” by sitting in a circle and learning by ear.

In 2001, Sandy first became a member of the Southern California Scandia Fiddlers and participated in every workshop, festival, and folk dance that she could. And since being so generously trained and supported by that community, she recently became the lead fiddler of this group and is proud to create the programs for each monthly dance.  In the summer of 2016, Sandy took her first trip to Sweden and had the opportunity to play alongside the fiddling “gods” of Dalarna and participate in epic music festivals.

In 2014, Sandy started composing tunes in the Swedish folk tradition and now some of her tunes are performed for dancing in the United States. She now shares this work on her YouTube Channel, Fiddle Notes, and posts fun pictures and videos on Instagram @fiddle.notes

Cello

Sandy began her cello studies at age 12 and quickly progressed to play in advanced youth orchestras and other ensembles.  But after taking a long hiatus, she returned to the cello and for the last 20 years has played in several Southern California orchestras including the Bakersfield Symphony, the West Hollywood Orchestra, and still currently performs with the Culver City Symphony Orchestra, where she has been a member for 20 years.

She has performed in other numerous ensembles and regularly performs solo or with a partner for weddings, funerals, parties, and other events. For the last five years, she has been performing with acclaimed Norwegian Singer-Songwriter and recording artist, Caroline Waters, in several jazz clubs and other venues around Los Angeles.

In other directions, Sandy has dabbled in some recording work for film and dance and in past years, also worked as a teaching artist in a middle school where she coached students in cello and violin. She has taught cello lessons for scores of young cellists and adult beginners for the past 20 years and finds that teaching is a real passion.
